Over the August Bank Holiday weekend this year, two former military officers, Calum Morrison (Royal Marines) and Jonathan Parrott (Royal Artillery) aim to complete an extreme triathlon in aid of Help for Heroes. In just 40 hours, we will run, kayak and swim the entire 105 km length of Scotland’s Great Glen, and iconic part of Britain's landscape, from Inverness to Fort William.
Starting on Saturday 28 th August 2010 and over the course of that weekend, we aim to kayak Loch Ness and swim the length of Lochs Oich and Lochy and run in between each along the Great Glen Way. The total swimming and kayaking distance is 22 km swimming, 37 km kayaking, with the overall running distance approximately 46 km (longer than a marathon). At the end of the Challenge we will run to Fort William, via the Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge. Additional details can be found on the Help for Hereos website on the Extraordinary Challenges page www.helpforheroes.org.uk/great-glen-challenge.html. For a detailed outline of the route please see the attached map.
The Great Glen Challenge, in support of Help for Heroes (H4H), was conceived through a desire to support and assist the country’s servicemen and women that have suffered as a result of Britain’s involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. H4H is a charity that since its launch in October 2007 has raised over £1m a month, with that money used directly to benefit those injured in combat. For more information please see the H4H website at www.helpforheroes.org.uk.
Most of us take mobility and function for granted, but for many of our servicemen and women, the loss of limbs, sight or mental ability signifies a catastrophic lifestyle change; a change that needs to be managed far beyond the immediate care provided by medical services. Our aim is to complete this challenge and raise a substantial sum of money through sponsorship, in order to augment and enhance the rehabilitation facilities and support for these service men and women. We have both served or operated in Iraq and Afghanistan and were fortunate enough to return in one piece. As such, we are thankful for our mobility and intend to traverse an iconic part of the British Landscape without the aid of mechanical means.
We would like to invite you to be part of this extraordinary challenge, and assist Britain’s injured service men and women by helping us to achiev our aim. Any sponsorship or donation that you can give would be very gratefully received, and directly benefit those injured in the service of their country
Keep up with the Challenge preparations and those involved on through twitter and the Challenge blog page on this site. Also check out the Facebook Page – Great Glen Challenge.

A Final Word from the Team
A week has passed since Jon and I successfully completed the Challenge and I confess that I feel a slight void where the keen focus used to be......no more (for the time being) early morning swims in freezing water, late evening trundles across the hills at home or circuits in solitude down in the stables, with only bemused ponies for company. Now only photographs, slightly sore muscles and video clips; the tenuous reminders of a wonderfully visceral experience. read more
